Five tips for living and loving life after cancer

Sept. 6, 2017 | by Georgia Gables

You’re cancer free, and it’s time to move on with your life.

You’ve been waiting a long time to hear those words, but it might not be nearly as simple as you thought it might be to move on following your cancer treatments.

You’ve been through so much with your diagnosis, your treatment, and your fear. It’s natural for you to feel relief, to worry, and to be afraid of what the future holds even after your doctor tells you your cancer is gone and your life is moving on.

It’s a sweet moment with a lot of bitter mixed in.

You will never be the same person you were before you were diagnosed with breast cancer.

You’ve grown, learned, and become a new person.

It’s alright to feel more than one emotion, and it’s all right to be afraid of what the future holds.

Now that you’re cancer free, though, you might consider adopting a few of these tips to help you learn to really live and love again following your battle with cancer.

Embrace the New You

You’re a new person, and that’s all right.

If people can’t deal with the changes in your personality and your outlook, find new friends to have fun with.

You need people who understand you and want you to be yourself.

The new you is a much stronger, much more amazing woman than you were in the past. Embrace her and learn to love her.

Never Miss An Appointment

The one thing you want to be sure you never do is to miss any of your breast cancer recurrence tests.

You might be cancer free right now, but you do have a much larger risk of being diagnosed again in the future.

You want to do everything you can for yourself, which means catching it early.

Don’t miss any appointments even though you’re now cancer-free.

Change Your Lifestyle

It’s time to take life seriously.

You’re going to improve your life in more ways than one when you get serious about eating well, exercising regularly, and living an active lifestyle.

Eat the ice cream, skip the gym, and enjoy life, but learn to do those things in moderation so you can really live.

You decrease your risk of being diagnosed again in the future when you take care of yourself.

You also make it possible to really enjoy your life when you get healthy.

Live A Little

You just lived through cancer, and that means you probably thought you might not see this day more than once.

Do the things you wanted to do before you were diagnosed.

Take chances, travel, see the world, and do what makes your heart happy more often.

This is your second chance, and it’s time to take advantage of that.

Take Life A Day at A Time

You have your entire life ahead of you, but the fear and worry of what might happen in the future will always bring you down.

Make it a point to live right now. Live your life in the moment and don’t worry about tomorrow.

Worry about your life today so you can enjoy what it has to offer now.

Don’t live in constant fear of being diagnosed again. Enjoy life as it is.

Your life has changed, and you have changed with it.

You’re not the same person you were before you were diagnosed with breast cancer, and that’s a good thing.

If you want to really live and love during this new phase in your life, do it with open arms and an open mind.

Don’t let petty fears ruin your chance at real happiness. Understand life is not always perfect, but that you have the option to enjoy it regardless.

Your life is in your control, and you only have so long to enjoy it.
